Hood, Joseph, "Joe", E. (clipping) 14 May 1945 (image) Pte. Jos. Hood, Prisoner (clipping) Kitchener Record 9 Aug 1944 Pte. J.E. "Joe" Hood, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hood, 106 Wellington St. N. Pte. Hood has been missing in action in Normandy since July 28. In his most recent letter home, dated July 24, he told of being assigned to night duty. The young soldier was born and educated in Kitchener. Following his call to service he was connected with the Kent Regiment, but shortly after transferred to an active unit. He had been in France only a few weeks and had arrived overseas just prior to the invasion. He had hoped to join the R.C.A.F., but found most openings had been filled. Before he could enlist as an airman, he received notice to report to the army. Mrs. Hood is the mother of four sons in the service. In addition to Joe, Gunner Cyril Kroetsch is stationed in Petawawa, Pte. Stanley Kroetsch is stationed on the west coast, and Able Seaman Elmer Kroetsch serves with the navy in England. (clipping) Kitchener Record 18 Oct. 1944 Prisoner Of War Pte. Joseph E. (Joe) Hood, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J Hood, 106 Wellington St. N. Pte. Joe Hood Pte. Hood, missing in action in Normandy since July 28, has sent a card to his delighted parents, informing them that he is alive, and in a German prison camp. He had been in France only a few weeks when he was taken prisoner. Called to the service, the 20-year-old soldier transferred from the Kent Regiment to an active unit, and arrived overseas just prior to the invasion. Able Seaman Elmer Kroetsch, just arrived in this country after 23 months' duty at sea, is home on leave to rejoice in the safety of his step-brother. Their mother has two other sons in the service, Gunner Cyril Kroetsch and Pte. Stanley Kroetsch. (clipping) Kitchener Record 14 May 1945 Pte. Hood, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hood, 106 Wellington St.N., was captured in Normandy last July. He is now safe in England. Pte. Hood, born and educated in Kitchener, had only been in France a few weeks when captured. Mrs. Hood is the mother of four other sons serving their country. One son, Pte. Stanley Kroetsch, 28, is in Germany, another, Ordinary Seaman Elmer Kroetsch, 30 is at sea, while two other sons, Pte. Cyril Kroetsch, 27, and Pte. Thomas Hood, 19, are stationed at Ottawa and Ipperwash respectively.

Hopf, H. J. "Sunny" (clipping) Kitchener Record 10 Feb. 1945 (image) Driver - Pte. H. J. Hopf, 14 King St. E., has returned from overseas. He drove army trucks in England and France for two years. (clipping) Kitchener Record 17 Feb. 1945 Suffers Stomach Hurts Near Caen "I was sitting on the ground waiting for an appointment with the medical officer who was going to give me something for my stomach. I got something for my stomach alright, but it came from Jerry - not the M.O." "He sent over an 88-mm. shell and a piece of shrapnel got me in the stomach. One of my companions was killed and four others were casualties. I was in hospital a month," said Pte. H.J. (Sunny) Hopf, who arrived back in Kitchener last night after two years and eight months overseas. He received his wound near Caen. Son of Mrs. Magdalene Hopf, 14 King St. E., the soldier has been returned to Canada owing to ill health. "I had a couple other close calls but everybody has them," said the soldier. "Most of the time I was driving a truck for the R.C.A.S.C. It was a good job and in some ways much easier in France than in England. The French highways were practically all hard-surfaced, broad and straight, which was quite different from the narrow, winding roads of England." "The feature I didn"t like was the slow speeds used in travel. Practically all our work was in convoys, travelling from five to 30 miles an hour. If you have a truck in front of you and another behind, it gets monotonous cruising along at only five miles an hour." The soldier married an English girl last June and expects her to join him in Canada soon. He was born in Kitchener and lived here until enlistment in January, 1942. He was also a truck driver in civilian life.
