According to Hamilton Spectator newspaper articles dated 24 November 1962 and 19 December 1953, Mr. Norman S. Laing took over ownership of the Branchton Centre Store in 1909 from his father, Michael Laing. After Norman Laing's death, his daugther, Marion, continued to run the store until 1956, when she sold it to Mr. and Mrs. William Bell.

This Italianate style home was built by Louis Breithaupt in 1870. The house, also known as Waldeck, remained within the Breithaupt family until it was demolished in 1965.
Louis Breithaupt established the first tannery in Berlin, Ontario in 1857. He also served as the mayor of Berlin between 1879-1880.
