Private Louis Cornelius Bender, son of Rosina Seck (Heck, Hecke) and Adam Bender, was born on a farm just outside Bamberg, Ontario on November 11, 1887. Louis was the 7th of 10 children. He was baptised Ludwig Bender on November 20, 1887 in St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, St. Agatha, Ontario by Rev. J. Schweitzer. Sponsors for his baptism were Louis Strauss and Maria Strauss.
Louis was working for Mr. J. Lister as a gas driller and lived in Byng, Ontario, when he enlisted in the Canadian Army on April 26, 1916. According to his Attestation Paper he was only 5' 31/2" tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. His father Adam Bender is listed as next of kin.
On October 31, 1916 Louis sailed from Halifax on the S.S.Caronia. He served with the 114th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Canada, Britain and France. Private Louis Bender fought in World War I in the Canadian Infantry Central Ontario Regiment in the 4th Battalion. He was recognized by his regimental number: 739340.
Louis was killed in action on Friday, August 9, 1918, on the 2nd day of the Battle of Amiens. He was one of a Lewis Gun crew and was temporarily engaged on patrol work, when he was hit in the head by a bullet from the rifle of an enemy sniper and almost instantly killed at the Hindenburg Line. Louis was buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery in Somme, France, Plot 2, Row A, Grave 32. He was bestowed with the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His name is on the Wellesley Cenotaph located in Linwood, Ontario.

Private Leo Esbaugh was born on July 12th, 1888 in the township of Waterloo North, Ontario to Clemens Esbaugh and Agatha Dietrich. He had seven siblings.
Leo enlisted on May 10th, 1918 at the First Depot Battalion at London, Ont. His regimental number was #3135275.His attestation papers stated that he was 5 feet 11 inches, of a dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He was Roman Catholic. He served as a sapper.
In 1911, he worked as a bar tender.
In 1921 he boarded with the Peter Veidenheimer family in St. Clements and worked as a butcher. On May 14th, 1923 he was married to Louise Hoffarth in Hanover, Ontario. He had three children; Marie, Raymond and Clement.
Leo died on August 26th, 1961 in York, Ontario and was buried in Hanover Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Private Herbert Fahrenkopf was born on December 2, 1891 in St. Clements, Ontario. He was drafted in November 1917 while living in Springwater, Saskatchewan. He was single at the time and working as a farmer. Fahrenkopf was drafted into the 12 M.D First Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment. His ID number was 256827.
This battalion was drafted to provide reinforcements for the 5th, 28th and 46th Battalions and the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles and the 15th Canadian Reserve Battalion. Fahrenkopf was relocated to the 5th Battalion. The War Diary for this battalion has survived and can be accessed online at Library and Archives Canada.
Private Fahrenkopf was killed in action, by the explosion of an enemy shell during the battle for Caix, France, on August 8, 1918. During this battle, Canadian, Australian and French troops were successful in recapturing the village from the Germans. Forty-three allied soldiers fell that day, including Herbert Fahrenkopf.
His body would have been buried at Ridge Cemetery, but later moved to Caix cemetery after the armistice. His name is also listed among the many who lost their lives in France at the Vimy Ridge Memorial.
