Private James Abbott, Service No. 528517
Born in Carlow Ireland, James later resided at the Coombe Home in Hespeler, Ontario. He was a 22 year old student in Strathroy when he enlisted with the Number 2 Field Artillery Depot on 19 Jan 1916 at London Ontario. His next of kin was shown as Mrs. Emily Shepherd, sister, 56 Scollard Street, Toronto, ON on his attestation paper.
He served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps at the CAMC Hospital at Havre, France. There, he became ill and was invalided to England with appendicitis. He returned to Canada and was discharged on 15 May 1919. James died on 26 May 1922 at the Byron Sanitarium. His death was attributed to a 'lingering illness' from the war. He is buried in the Strathroy Cemetery.

Hespeler, Sept. 22.- Late last evening Mr. and Mrs. E. Alexander received word their son, Pte. James Alexander, had been wounded in action in France. The word was received from Pte. Alexander's wife, who resides at Sheffield.

James Alexander Wins the M.M. for Gallantry

Pte. James Alexander, 27, (acting corporal) of Galt, Hespeler and Sheffield has been awarded the military medal, according to an announcement today by national defence headquarters, Ottawa. The announcement named six officers who received the Military Cross and three other ranks who received the Military Medal for "gallantry in action".
Ottawa announced that no citations were available. Pte. Alexander, one of three brothers in the service, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Alexander, Hespeler, and his wife resides in Sheffield. He was employed in Galt at B.W. and G.M. before enlisting.
Last September he was reported as wounded in action on the western front where he was fighting with a Canadian infantry battalion. His twin brothers, Jack and Ward Alexander, are both overseas, the latter being with the paratroop corps.

The tragic word that their son, Pte. Thomas Ward Alexander, 20, had given his life in action with the canadian forces in Germany, was received by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Alexander, Queen St. East, last evening.
Pte. Alexander was born in this district and at the time of his enlistment was employed at the Hespeler Furniture Co., Ltd. plant. He went overseas shortly after the Christmas season.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Alexander of Hespeler, four brothers, two of whom are now serving with the Canadian forces overseas, Cpl. James Alexander, whose home is at Sheffield, and Paratrooper Jack Alexander, and Roddie and Hugh Alexander at home; and two sisters, Mrs. R. Winfield, Silver Heights, and Mrs. C. Orton, of London.

Harry Anderson, son of Mrs. A. D. Anderson and the late Mr. Anderson, Hespeler, enlisted with the 29th Field Battery on Sept. 12, 1939. He was born at White Wood, Sask., Aug. 28, 1916, and came to Hespeler in 1923. A younger brother, George, enlisted with the 29th Field Battery the same day as Harry. His religion is Baptist. (Regimental No. A-28128).

CHARLES ASHBY
Gunner Charles A. L. Ashby is on active service in Canada with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Gunner Ashby is a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Ashby, 109 Beverly street. He was born born in Hespeler, Sept. 29, 1920, attended school in Hespeler and Preseton and was working at the Stauffer Dobbie plant as a weaver when he enlisted. He is an adherent of Rose St. Baptist church.
