He was later transferred to the 256th Overseas Railway Construction Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. His unit sailed from Halifax on March 26, 1917 aboard the SS Missanabie and arrived in Liverpool, England on April 7, 1917. On May 31, 1917 he was transferred to the 10th Canadian Railway Troops, and arrived in France on June 19, 1917. Harvey served throughout France and Belgium.

Sapper George Aylward (Regimental/Service #1099296), enlisted on February 1, 1917 in Toronto, Ontario, with the 256th Railway Construction Battalion. He previously served with the "D" Company, 18th Battalion for 17 months as a private (Regimental/Service #53883). He was born on July 28, 1870 in Bromley, Kent England.
At the time of his enlistment he was married to Annie Aylward and resided at 37 Pequegnat Ave. in Kitchener, Ontario. He had a son named Harry. His occupation was listed as waterworks labourer and his religion was Church of England.
He served in France.
