Notes
The 118th North Waterloo Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.), were trained for service overseas during World War I. Although no individuals have been identified, it is likely that Roy Hilts, the donor's father, is included in the picture. The Berlin Portrait Room was owned and operated by Ernest Denton. He was a photographer in Berlin/Kitchener from approximately 1912 to 1955. He operated photography studios at various locations in the city. The photograph is mounted on a mat. The mat has worn edges, with a small piece missing from the bottom. There are glue and paper remnants across the bottom of the mat, suggesting that a label may have been removed at some point in time. The image has many fine surface scratches, worn edges and a missing bottom right corner.

Notes
In 1901, the Ontario Sugar Company of Toronto planned to build the first sugar beet mill in Canada in either Dunnville or Berlin, Ontario. Interested in learning more about the sugar beet industry, the Berlin Board of Trade organized an excursion of Berlin citizens to the Peninsular Sugar Refining Company in Caro, Michigan to observe firsthand the processes involved. Impressed by the operations of the Michigan factory, the delegation returned to Berlin eager to secure the sugar beet mill. Berlin was the chosen site and a mill was built along the Grand River, between the town limits and Bridgeport. The mill began operations in October, 1902. Photograph appears on page 93 of the 1972 Waterloo Historical Society annual volume. L.J. Breithaupt, George DeBus, and Dr. Bowlby were included in the delegation, but they are not identified in photograph. Small tear and thumb tack hole at bottom centre of photograph.
