Bauman, Jerome S See also Helwig, Robert F Newspaper article Picture included Found Italy War Toughest of All Just returned from overseas where he saw action in the Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe campaigns, Gunner Jerome S. Bauman, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, says that the people of Holland and Belgium appeared to be worse off, from the point of view of food supplies, than the Italians. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bauman, 100 Louisa St., Gunner Bauman made it plain that even though Italy appears to have a little more food than Hollan or Belgium, none of the countries mentioned have very much and all three are in dire need of assistance. Gunner Bauman participated in the battles of Sicily and Italy before going with the 1st Canadian Division through France to join the rest of the Canadian forces in the Low Countries. Of the two fighting fronts, he said the Italian battleground was the toughest. "The Jerries knew how to make the most of the rugged terrain by erecting strong defences and unless we kept them on the run they made things tough for us. If we stopped any length of time the Nazis got dug in so well we actually had to blast them out," he said. The Twin City soldier was very grateful for the cigarettes and parcels sent by the Canadian Legion and the Overseas Parcels Commitee. He plans to return to his job with the Canada Dry Ginger Ale Co. in the near future.
