Sign in the Woolworth's window reads: "May Sale, Thursday, Friday, Saturday". Signs in the A. Sippel window read: "Lease Expires, Forced to Vacate, Smash!, Down Come Prices, The Premier Bargain Event of All Times; Big Sale of Shoes." A banner hanging on its side from the third story reads: "Yule Tide Dance, Odd Fellows Hall, Dec. 31st." Painted on the second story windows to the right of A. Sippel & Son are the words "Dr. A.E. Ernest Denton was a photographer in Berlin/Kitchener from approximately 1912 to 1955. He operated photography studios at various locations in the city. He worked with another photographer in a studio named "Denton & Gifford" between 1924-1925. This photograph is in fair condition: a small of portion of the upper right corner is torn off; a much larger portion of the lower right corner of the photo is missing.

A photograph showing the same storefront appears in Berlin Today 1806-1906. According to the 1901-1903 Vernon's City of Berlin and Waterloo directory, the C.W. Hagen shoe store was located on the north side of King Street East, Berlin, Ontario, just past Scott Street. The directory does not list a street number for the store, but the proceeding store listed has a street number of 96. According to the 1907 Vernon's City of Berlin, Waterloo, and Bridgeport directory, the C.W. Hagen shoe store became Sippel & Hagen and moved to 11 King Street East, Berlin, Ontario. Original cataloguing records indicate that this was the E.J. Shantz Grocery on Frederick Street, Berlin, in 1910. Elo Josiah (E.J.) Shantz, born 22 August 1874, in Lebanon, Wellington County, Ontario, was shown as a merchant in Berlin in the 1901 and 1911 Canadian censuses. However, his store is not listed in the 1910-1911 Berlin directory. Shantz was also an auctioneer. Shantz married Malinda Snyder on 26 September 1900 in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario. He died on 11 March 1954 in Kitchener, Ontario and was buried at First Mennonite Cemetery. See also (local identifier): P001497 This photo is in fair condition: somewhat faded.
