LISTOWEL, Jan. 2, - Pte. Gerard Melville Bogues, 19, member of an infantry unit fighting in Italy, is listed as missing and believed to be a prisoner of war, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George M. Bogues, Listowel, have been advised by the director of records, Ottawa.
While the date of the incident was given, the message requested the parents not to divulge the date or name of his unit to prevent possible aid to the enemy.
The boy's last letter home was written in late November and stated that he had been in hospital for six days suffering from an infected hand. He related how he and several others had narrowly escaped death when a building in which they were hiding had collapsed when struck by an enemy shell. In this fracas he had received cuts on the hand, which later developed the infection.
The young soldier's mother is of the opinion that he had been back in action only a short time when reported missing, since a recent communication from her niece living in England had revealed that he had written relatives there after being confined to the hospital for three weeks. The neice also remarked that his letter indicated that he was completely worn out.
A native of Listowel, Pte. Bogues was born on April 19, 1925, and received his education here. For a while he was employed by the Maitland Spinning Mills, and later he worked for Smith's grocery. The day after his 17th birthday, the young lad went to Brampton, where he enlisted with the Lorne Scots Regiment. He trained at Niagara-on-the-Lake and the west coast. Upon arrival in England, he was with the infantry reserve, and was later posted to an infantry unit which proceeded to Italy in April, 1944.
The only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bogues, he has two sisters, Pte. Ethel Bogues, C.W.A.C., attached to the military hospital at Woodstock, and Miss Pauline Bogues, Toronto.
This is the first Listowel casualty reported in the past eight weeks.
