The church was built between 1851-1853 on property located south of Highways 7 and 8, which was the site of Irvin Knipfel's farm in 1951. This building was replaced by the present church in 1916. The present church was constructed on property located north of Highways 7 and 8 on land given by August Knipfel in exchange for the old property. An additional photograph of the original church is found in the 100th Anniversary Booklet of Emmanuel Lutheran Church (page 5) in the Waterloo Historical Society book collection.
