Richard Walden Armstrong (registered at birth as Walden Richard Armstrong)
Second Lieutenant.
Richard Walden Armstrong enlisted in the 227th Battalion at Sault Ste. Marie, ON, 17 July 1916. The 227th Battalion embarked from Halifax 11 April 1917 and disembarked in England 22 April 1917. The 227th was absorbed by 8th Canadian Reserve Battalion on 22 April 1917. On 25 August 1917, The London Gazette noted the promotion of Richard Walden Armstrong to Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers.
Walden Richard Armstrong was born on 6 May 1898 to Emma Julia Armstrong (nee Walden) and Richard Armstrong. His maternal grandparents were residents of Berlin, Ontario. He attended Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate in 1912 and 1913 and then proceeded to complete two years at the Royal Military College (RMC) in Kingston. He left RMC without graduating.
Richard Armstrong returned to Canada from the war 27 December 1919. He emigrated to the United States in 1922 and became an American citizen 10 May 1935. At the time of the 1940 U.S. census, he lived at 191 Front Street, Berea, Ohio with his wife Ada. His occupation is listed as Foreman of an illuminating company. He died on 22 May 1960 in Berea. At the time of his death he was married to Jean (nee Fladder). He did not have any children.
