John was born in German Mills (now part of Kitchener), Ontario on March 23, 1898. He enlisted on July 19, 1916 and served with the 118th Battalion, subsequently transferring to the 2nd Canadian Pioneer Battalion.
At the time of his enlistment he lived with his parents, John Sr. and Hannah, at 85 Elgin Street, Berlin (now Kitchener) Ontario. He was a Methodist.
Prior to his enlistment, he was a draftsman.
He survived the war and in July 1922 emigrated to the United States at Detroit. He listed his trade as a tinsmith. On December 24, 1924 he married 19 year old Margaret Harrison of Windsor, in Windsor, Ontario. The couple then moved to Baltimore, Maryland.
John died on February 14, 1980, at the age of 81, in Polk County, Florida.
