Lieutenant-Colonel.
At the outbreak of the war he volunteered for service overseas with 72nd Seaforth Highlanders of Vancouver to which he had previously belonged, and went to Valcartier as lieutenant. At Valcartier he was appointed Hon. Captain and Quartermaster of 16th Battalion. This Battalion
was afterwards called the Canadian Scottish and covered itself with glory particularly at St. Julien.
In June 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross and was later mentioned in despatches for bravery. He was appointed to the staff as D.A.A. and I.M.G. and afterwards was raised to rank of Major.
He was transferred from Divisional Headquarter to Corps Headquarters and when the armistice was signed he had the pleasure and satisfaction of representing the Canadian Corps and receiving the first hand-over of stores from the Germans under the terms of the armistice.
In 1919 he was awarded the D.S.O. and later became Asst. Adjutant and Quarter Master General at 1st Division Hdqts. with rank of Lieut-Colonel. He was invested at Buckingham Palace with D.S.O.; M.C. and Mons Medals.
He saw continuous service in France and Belgium during four years of war and came through without a scratch. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Browne, 356 King St. W. Kitchener.
