Lance Corporal Peter Janson (Regimental/Service #53128), enlisted on October 26, 1914 in London, Ontario with the 18th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF Western Ontario Regiment). He was born on May 27, 1886 in Stockholm, Sweden.
At the time of his enlistment, he was not married and his occupation was a labourer. He listed his next of kin as M. Shantz (friend) of Berlin, ON. He listed his religion as Lutheran.
His unit sailed on board the SS Grampian on April 18, 1915, and arrived in England on April 29, 1915. He arrived in France September 15, 1915.
His war records indicate that he was wounded twice, and he had received a field promotion to rank of Lance Corporal on August 22, 1917.
Peter was killed in action on November 9, 1917 at the Second Battle of Passchendaele. He was 31 years of age.
Noted in his wartime records was his widow, Nelly Janson of 254 Hill Street, London, Ontario.
His sacrifice is honoured at the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial in Belgium. Panel 10-26-28.
His soldier card incorrectly identifies him as "Peter Jansen".
