James was born August 4, 1894 in Staffordshire, England, to Edward and Ann Mason. He left Liverpool with his brother Job on July 4, 1913 on the vessel Victorian and arrived in Quebec on July 12, 1913. Both James and Job then came to Berlin to meet up with their sister Rachel Elizabeth and brother John Richard who had come in 1912.
James enlisted in Berlin on January 11, 1915. His regimental number was #602147. On his attestation form, he listed his occupation as a shipper and his next of kin as his father, Edward Mason. His religion was noted as Church of England.
He was attached to 108th Regiment, 34th Battalion (Infantry). James left Canada on October 28, 1915, aboard the S.S. California. The ship arrived in England on November 1, 1915 where he was transferred to the 14th Battalion and sent to France. He also served in the 23rd Battalion but mostly served in the 34th Battalion when in England. He served in France from 1915 to 1918. He received no major injuries as a result of his service.
He was discharged on March 19, 1919 in London, Ontario.
James eventually moved to Brantford where he married Frances Cowperthwaite on June 25, 1919. They have three sons, Edward, Albert and Douglas. James died February 16, 1972 in Brantford, Ontario.
