A Toronto Star article of 18 September 1918 remarked that Payne's wife Cora stated "'He is not dead. I know he is still living.' The brave little lady received a telegram that her soldier husband was killed on August 30." A 28 November 1918 article noted that: "Pte Rev Harold Payne was killed during a brilliant attack upon Upton Wood on Aug 30. Reports from the front state that Pte Payne displayed great courage as he put himself at the head of his platoon after many were killed.".
The envelope containing his death notification noted that he was serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France.
