Private George Harold Davis enlisted in Galt January 15, 1915 with the 34th Battalion of the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, number 602032. On his attestation paper he listed his occupation as a painter, and marital status as single. He shows his next-of-kin to be John Davis of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Davis was born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England on April 14, 1893. He had four sisters (Annie Alice, Mabel Lilian, Mildred Kate, and Maude Gertrude) and one brother (Ralph Wilfrid). His parents were John Davis (1861-1953) and Eliza Sarah (nee Ralph) (1859-1934).
A mechanic machinist by trade, he departed Liverpool, England with his brother when he was 18, on the Virginian and arrived in Quebec on June 2, 1911. In 1921, the Census of Canada lists Davis as a farmer living in North Dumfries with his sister Maude, and his mother and father. His brother Ralph married Mary Gray of Galt, on November 26, 1919.
