Private Herbert Fahrenkopf was born on December 2, 1891 in St. Clements, Ontario. He was drafted in November 1917 while living in Springwater, Saskatchewan. He was single at the time and working as a farmer. Fahrenkopf was drafted into the 12 M.D First Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment. His ID number was 256827.
This battalion was drafted to provide reinforcements for the 5th, 28th and 46th Battalions and the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles and the 15th Canadian Reserve Battalion. Fahrenkopf was relocated to the 5th Battalion. The War Diary for this battalion has survived and can be accessed online at Library and Archives Canada.
Private Fahrenkopf was killed in action, by the explosion of an enemy shell during the battle for Caix, France, on August 8, 1918. During this battle, Canadian, Australian and French troops were successful in recapturing the village from the Germans. Forty-three allied soldiers fell that day, including Herbert Fahrenkopf.
His body would have been buried at Ridge Cemetery, but later moved to Caix cemetery after the armistice. His name is also listed among the many who lost their lives in France at the Vimy Ridge Memorial.
