Private David Black enlisted on December 28, 1915 at Guelph, Ontario. His reg. no. was 928111 and his religion was listed as Church of England. He was on the 153rd Battalion Nominal Roll published January 12, 1916 in the Guelph Mercury. He transferred to the 216th Battalion on February 2, 1917. His name appears on the 216th Battalion sailing list of April 18, 1917 aboard the SS Scandinavian from Halifax, Nova Scotia. David Black survived the war and returned to Halifax, Nova Scotia aboard the SS Winifredian.
David Black was born on June 11, 1894 in Dublin, Ireland. He sailed to Canada on May 2, 1907 aboard the ship, Tunisian out of Liverpool. He was part of the Smyly Home group of children destined for the Coombe Home in Hespeler, Ontario. David worked as a farm labourer on farms in Waterloo Township and Dundas, Ontario.
David had a younger brother Christie(Christopher, Chris) Black who also emigrated to the Coombe Home in Hespeler, Ontario in 1909. Christie (reg.no.424583) enlisted on September 8, 1915 at Camp Sewell near Brandon, Manitoba.
