Private Emerald Brittan Broadwell was born on October 31, 1896, in Kingsville, Ontario. His parents, Amos and Elizabeth, moved the family (siblings Beryl, Garnett, Jasper, Coral, Amber and Ruby) to Pincher Creek, Alberta. Before enlisting, Emerald worked as an apprentice machine fitter at Goldie & McCullock, in Galt, Ontario.
Eight days before his 18th birthday, Emerald enlisted with the 18th Battalion CEF on October 23, 1914. On April 29, 1915, Emerald arrived in England and went to France on September 14, 1915. Private Broadwell served on the front lines with the 18th Battalion as an expert marksman. He saw action near Ypres, Belgium. He was placed in charge of the snipers in D Company. Private Broadwell was reported killed in action on January 30, 1916 at age 19. Although his remains were not identified, his name appears on the walls of the Memin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. Emerald was the recipient of three medals: 1914-15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
