Regimental Number 6457
Church of England
Stanley, as he was known, was born in 1889 at Foleshill, Warwhickshire, England to parents John Edward Gibberd and Elizabeth Jane Farrow. After school he served 3 years in the Imperial Yeomanry. He emigrated to Canada sometime after 1911. He was a member of B Company, 29th Regiment (Militia) in Galt according to a 1914 Pay-List.
After the outbreak of war, he enlisted at Valcartier, Quebec on 22 September 1914. After training at Valcartier he sailed for England with the rest of the Canadian Division. The Division was reorganized while training on Salsbury Plain and Stanley was assigned to the 1st Canadian Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment). The Division moved to France in early 1915 and went into the line just prior to the Second Battle of Ypres. It is probable that he was taken prisoner during that battle. Stanley died on 7 July 1915 of a "Gunshot Wound Breast" while a prisoner of War at "Feldlaz 3, 7 a.k., Phelempin".
He is buried at the Phalempin Communal Cemetery, Grave Number 6, which is 9 1/4 miles North East of Lens, France. According to records, his mother was listed as next-of-kin and still lived at Boscomber, Bournemouth, Hants, England.
