Lieutenant James Pomeroy Cavers was born on December 29, 1891 in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Mrs. J. Dyas and Mr. William Andrew Cavers. Cavers was educated at the Galt Collegiate Institute, Upper Canada College and Toronto University. He was Presbyterian.
On January 28th, 1915, Cavers enlisted in the Eaton Machine Gun Battery. He was promoted Sergeant before going overseas in May 1916. While in France, he fought on the front lines with the Battery until July 1916 when he was wounded in battle. Upon recovery, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, 150th Squadron as a cadet. In August 1917, he was commissioned to Lieutenant and sent to Saloniki, Greece on active service. On September 3, 1918, while on escort duty protecting a reconnaissance machine, he was attacked by six enemy planes. Against the odds, he stayed and fought in an effort to allow the slower machine to escape but his plane was hit and he landed in Lake Doiran. He was shot while swimming to shore and sank.
In honor of his services, he was Mentioned in Despatches, and listed on the Doiran Memorial Cemetery in Greece. He is also commemorated on Page 584 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
