Private William (Willie) Chard was born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England on 5 Oct 1887, son of Margaret McDermott and Thomas Harrison Chard.
At enlistment in Toronto, Ontario on 21 March 1916, William was residing in Hespeler, Ontario. He was single and a cabinet maker. He was 5' 6" tall with a dark complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, a scar on his left knee, and a scar from a hernia operation. His religion was Church of England. Next of kin was his mother Margaret of 4 Bilton Drive, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. William was assigned to the 92nd Battalion with regimental number 193468. Prior to enlisting, he spent 4 years with the 5th West Yorkshire Regiment.
In 1917 William married Marguerite Clarke at Hespeler, Ontario. By 1920 they were living in Windsor, Ontario where William was working for Burrough's Adding Machine Company. By 1921 and still in Windsor, Ontario, his occupation was Inspector. The couple went on to have a daughter and son while residing in Windsor. In 1927 the family moved to Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., where they resided until at least 1940. During this time William's occupation was body inspector at an auto factory.
William died in 1971 while residing in St. Louis County, Missouri, U.S.A.
