Black and white framed panoramic photograph of the construction of Shoemaker Avenue in Kitchener, Ontario. The image shows construction vehicles and labourers scattered along the length of the road.
P. Bergman and Son of Waterloo was the contractor responsible for this job. Stanley Shupe was the city engineer. A farm field is seen in the background, along with several houses and other buildings. The image is dated 16 June 1928.
Although no history of Shoemaker Avenue could be found, it was listed in the Vernon City Directory as early as 1901. It remains as a listing in these directories until 1967. In 1968, the Vernon City Directory under the name Shoemaker Avenue. says "see Stirling Ave. S.". It would appear that the name changed sometime in 1967-8 and has remained Stirling Ave. S. until this present date.
At the time of this photgraph a section of Shoemaker was under construction. Early directories listed the street as running from Mill Street to the city limits. It is not known which buildings are the ones visible in this photo.
Albert Seip has been identified as the man sitting in the cab of the truck with "contractors" written on it.
Shoemaker Avenue can be seen clearly marked on maps of Berlin/Kitchener, copies of which are held in the Grace Schmidt Room at the Kitchener Public Library:
1912 M416
1941 M015
1950s M039
Ernest Denton was a photographer in Berlin/Kitchener from approximately 1912 to 1955.
