Sergeant Hugh Donald Anderson enlisted with the 89th Battalion (King's Own Calgary Regiment) in Calgary, Alberta on 6 Nov 1915. On 18 May 1916 he was transferred to the 137th Battalion, delaying his departure overseas until 21 Aug 1916. The 137th was absorbed by the 21st Reserve Battalion sometime in the first half of 1917. Sergeant Anderson came back to Canada, arriving in Halifax on 8 Apr 1920.
Hugh Donald Anderson was born in Waterloo County on 22 Feb 1890 and lived for a time in Wellesley with his parents George Alexander and Mabel (nee Woodward) Anderson. Hugh attended Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate from 1906 to 1908. By the time of his enlistment in Calgary his family had moved to Alberta and he listed his occupation as rancher. His father died while Hugh was overseas. Upon returning to Canada he indicated he was married and listed his home as Calgary. He was Presbyterian.
Upon returning from a business trip to Europe in 1922, he wrote that his home was Shawnigan Lake, B.C.
